Upper endoscopy, or EGD, is a procedure the physicians at Atlantic Digestive Specialists perform using a thin, flexible scope with a light and camera at the tip to examine the inside of the upper digestive tract — the esophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine (the duodenum).
Upper endoscopy is more accurate than X-rays in helping our physicians identify the causes of abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, heartburn, bleeding, swallowing problems, inflammation, ulcers, and tumors.
If needed, a sample of tissue, called a biopsy, can be easily obtained through the scope during the procedure to aid in the diagnosis of upper gastrointestinal disorders. In addition, dilatation of strictures, placement of stents, and a variety of therapeutic maneuvers to stop bleeding can all be employed though the endoscope.
At Atlantic Digestive Specialists you will benefit from the personal care and technologically advanced procedures performed by our leading, board-certified gastroenterologists. Contact us for more information on the esophagogastroduodenoscopy procedure.
