Diverticula are common small, bulging pouches that most often form on the lining of the colon after the age of 40. Diverticulitis occurs when some of the pouches become inflamed or infected.
Signs & Symptoms of Diverticulitis
- Severe abdominal pain
- Pain lasting for several days
- Pain in lower left side of abdomen
- Pain in lower right side, most often if Asian
- Fever
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Abdominal tenderness
- Change in bowel movements
- Constipation

- Weak areas in colon give way under pressure
- Diverticula tears and becomes inflamed or infected
- Marble sized pouches protruding colon wall

- Physical exam
- Abdominal exam

- Diet change
- Antibiotics
- Pain medication when necessary

- Tube inserted to drain if have abscess
- Surgery when necessary (repeated attacks)
